Cybersecurity: 3 worrying trends

Cybersecurity reports for the first quarter of 2025 have already delivered their share of worrying insights. Three major trends are emerging.

1. Crypto-ransomware has never been so widespread

The number of crypto-ransomware-related extortions has risen by 126% compared with the same period in 2024. The statistic is simply mind- blowing. Crypto-ransomware is more than ever in the spotlight.

These attacks, which combine data encryption and ransom demands, are now often accompanied by additional extortion methods (threats of data leakage, public pressure, etc.), compounding their impact.

At the same time, the cybercriminal ecosystem is becoming more fragmented, with the emergence of new hacker groups. Becoming a cybercriminal is increasingly easy, for two reasons:

  • The leakage of existing ransomware source code
  • The democratization of artificial intelligence tools, which lowers the technical barriers to entry for cybercriminals

2. Worldwide increase in weekly attacks

The second trend is in line with the first: on a global scale, the number of attacks suffered each week by organizations has soared by almost 47%.

The most targeted sectors?

  • Education
  • Public services

But the sectors where the growth in attacks is most marked are :

  • Telecoms
  • Automotive
  • Software industry
  • Education

These figures confirm an already well-established fact: cyberattacks are becoming more numerous and more automated.

3.     The arrival of LLMs specially developed for hackers

OnionGPT, WormGPT, GhostGPT, FraudGPT, HackerGPT, .... All are LLMs developed specifically for hackers.

These clandestine LLMs, nicknamed Dark LLMs or Dark AIs, are :

  • Designed to generate attacks
  • Capable of bypassing the ethical filters of conventional Ais
  • Used as hacking tools in their own right.

It goes without saying that their proliferation is directly linked to the growing sophistication of attacks.

Key insights

These three trends demonstrate one fact: the cyber threat continues to intensify, both in volume and complexity.

Organizations must equip themselves with robust means of protection and surround themselves with experienced partners to ensure their cybersecurity.
