What is multi-factor authentication (MFA) ?

Multi-factor authentication: security first

In most cases, the first step is to enter a username and password. A second form of verification is then required, for example a code received on a smartphone, a notification to approve in an authentication app, a fingerprint or facial recognition.

The benefit of MFA is simple: a password alone is no longer enough. If it is stolen through a phishing campaign, a data breach or simply because it is too easy to guess, the cybercriminal will also need the second authentication factor in order to log in. In many cases, this additional step is enough to block the intrusion attempt.

Passwordless Authentication

Multi-factor authentication is now recommended for all sensitive accounts, including business email, business applications, VPN access, cloud services, financial tools and data management platforms. It is one of the most effective security measures for reducing the risk of account compromise.

Although MFA does not protect against every cyber threat, it significantly reduces the risk of unauthorised access when it forms part of a broader cybersecurity strategy. Combined with strong passwords, regular updates, system monitoring and employee awareness, it strengthens a company’s security over the long term and helps protect its most sensitive information.
